Your PAN card can become inoperative after March 31. Details inside

New Delhi: According to the latest Income Tax Department notification, your PAN card will become inoperative if you fail to link it with your Aadhaar card. The circular says that any taxpayer who was issued a permanent account number (PAN) as on the 1st day of July 2017 is required to link it with the Aadhaar, according to rule 114AA of the income tax.

Income Tax Rule 114AAA:

The notification read, “114AAA. Manner of making permanent account number inoperative. (1) Where a person, who has been allotted the permanent account number as on the 1st day of July 2017 and is required to intimate his Aadhaar number under sub-section (2) of section 139AA, has failed to intimate the same on or before the 31st day of March 2020, the permanent account number of such person shall become inoperative immediately after the said date for the purposes of furnishing, intimating or quoting under the Act.”


Also, any person whose PAN card becomes inoperative needs to furnish, intimate or quote their PAN under. If not, the person will be liable for all the consequences under the Act for not furnishing, intimating or quoting PAN.

When will PAN become operative again?

The notification clarified that the PAN card will become operative once again if the person has initiated his Aadhaar number after March 31, 2020.

“(3) Where the person referred to in sub-rule (1) has intimated his Aadhaar number under sub-section (2) of section 139AA after the 31st day of March 2020, his permanent account number shall become operative from the date of intimation of Aadhaar number for the purposes of furnishing, intimating or quoting under the Act and provisions of sub-rule (2) shall not be applicable from such date of intimation,” the notification read.

In case you don’t want to go through the trouble, you should try to get the two documents linked before March 31.

How to link PAN-Aadhaar:

1. Using e-Filing portal

Step 1: Login on e-Filing portal using your registered username and password.

Step 2: After login, you will get the “link Aadhaar” option under the ‘Profile Settings’.

2. Using SMS facility

You can even link your PAN and Aadhaar by sending a simple SMS. You just have to send an SMS to either of the PAN service providers namely NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited or UTI Infrastructure Technology And Services Limited (UTIITL).

You can link your Aadhaar with PAN by sending SMS to 567678 or 56161. Example of SMS to 567678 or 56161: UIDPAN 111122223333 AAAPA9999Q

3. Manual linking:

You can even link your Aadhaar to PAN manually. You just need to fill in the form ‘Annexure-1’ and submit the application form with the supporting documents like two Passport size photographs, copy of PAN card and copy of Aadhaar card.

Note that the Aadhaar number will be linked with PAN if your name and date of birth are identical in both documents. If the details are not matching, get the details changed in one document and then complete the linking process.
